When the data is not personal and is not prone to tampering the database does not need to be password protected. Passwords can severely restrict access to the database when trying to link to it via other application, such as Microsoft Office. However with the increasing risk from internet based attacks, security must be taken seriously. The degree of protection will vary depending the type of use and the risk of outside interference.
