Generally

Share Aid is supplied with over 140 sample share files. The tutorial will guide you through the steps required to set up and maintain share files and portfolios.

You may wish to call any files created during this tutorial session “TEST.???”, and delete them when you have finished experimenting.

Help Text

You will find a help button on each dialog box. When selected an appropriate help topic will be displayed with information about the dialog box. The help text contains bitmaps of each dialog box and menu. As the mouse cursor is moved over the help text dialogs it may change to a hand symbol. This indicates that there is a pop-up message associated with that part of the dialog box. Click the mouse button to display the message.

The first step is to create a share file

1. Start the program by selecting the Share Aid Icon.

2. Creating a New Share file.

Select the following menu items, File then New and then Share. A company details edit box is displayed for completion.

Fill in the details as thoroughly as possible. Do not press the return key until you have finished entering the data. To move to the next edit box press the Tab key to move back to the previous box press the Shift and Tab together.

Whilst you can leave the edit boxes empty doing so will make it difficult to identify the share data elsewhere in the program.

You will notice that a maximum and minimum value can be entered. These are purely for your use and serve no other purpose than to display horizontal lines on the graph. For the moment the maximum value will represent the price above which you will sell your shares and the minimum value will represent the purchase price below which you will make a loss.

Now select the OK button to save the details and process the data you have entered.

A “Save As” box will be displayed. “Save As” boxes are used to rename files or create a new file in which data may be stored. Four types of file may be created, .SHR share files, .PRT portfolio files, .IND index files, .VAL portfolio valuation files. Enter the name of the new file in the box above file list.

As this is to be a share file it must have the .SHR extension. For this tutorial use Test.shr. Select the OK button to create the file and save the company details.

3. Entering Account details.

Select the following menu items, Edit and then Account details. A list of the existing account details is displayed. To start with, it will be empty because we have not entered anything. Notice that the companies short name is displayed as confirmation of which companies accounts you are about to edit. Select the Add button to bring up the editing box, and then enter some fictional account data.

Notice that the current date has been filled in for you. Look at the Types of Announcement in the drop down list by clicking the button to the right of the list. Always enter dividends in pence, and profits and turnover in millions of pounds. When finished select the OK button.

When you enter dividends with the Type of Announcement set to 1st, 2nd, 3rd or Final dividend, the dividend figures are used to prepare reports and valuations elsewhere. If you do not enter these values correctly the reports and dividend data on other screens can become misleading.

To close the Account details box select the Close button.
