7. Editing the Portfolio contents. To add the share file to the portfolio select the following menu options Edit and then Portfolio details.
The Portfolio Selection box will be displayed. It should be empty. Select the Add button to bring up the Add item box.
Enter a figure for the purchase price of the shares and the number for shares held.
Select the Test.shr file from the file list provided. You can scroll through the list using the scroll bar or jump to the first item starting with T by entering a T in the list box. Alternatively you could type in the name yourself. Select the OK button when finished.
You should now see the share file displayed in the portfolio selection box similar to the one shown below. Add more share files if you wish and select Close when finished.
8. Creating a Portfolio Valuation file. To create a portfolio valuation file in which to record the current value of your portfolio follow the same steps as creating a share file but save it with the file extension .VAL. You may find it useful to give a valuation file the same name as the portfolio it relates to.
Valuation files can be added to the portfolios if required. You may find it convenient to insert the valuation file into the portfolio so that it is the first item. The first item in a portfolio is automatically loaded when the portfolio is loaded from the File | Load menu option.
9. Creating a Index file for a Stock Exchange. To create a stock exchange index file follow the same steps for creating a share file and save it with the . file extension. You should not use and .SHR file for the indexes as they will appear in any report data when the Reports menu options are run.
You cannot place indexes in a portfolio.
10. Updating Portfolios. You can now take this opportunity to try the Edit | Latest price update | All in portfolio option. If you added other shares to your test portfolio do not update them.
The portfolio update box is shown above. You skip updating shares by selecting the Skip button. The companies FT/Stock name is displayed in the update box to identify which share you are updating.
Note that the shares are presented for updating in the same order in which they were entered into the portfolio.
11. Displaying information. Its time to take a look at the data that has been entered. There are four display screens which are used to display information. They are displayed from the View menu option. These displays do not need to be closed in order to carry out other operations, and are automatically updated as each file is loaded or edited.
Try displaying each of the screens and experiment with the buttons.
The Company details display enables each set of account details and comments to be viewed, and displays information about the company.
The Share details display shows the latest price information and if the currently loaded portfolio contains that share file, the portfolio details are also displayed.
The Portfolio details display shows the overall portfolio valuation and the valuation of each of the shares contained in the portfolio.
